Eamon Flaherty Timber have a full range of machinery and are buyers of all types of woodlands.
Eamon Flaherty Timber uses various harvesting approaches for landowners to maximise their return from their crop when thinning or clearfelling.
We buy in both hardwood or softwood. We use lightweight machinery to minimise ground disturbance, which lowers the risk of damaging roots and reduces windblow in forest, leaving a better quality crop for the landowner. This approach is also taken when clearfelling to minimise ground damage and pollution to onsite streams, rivers or lakes.
We adhere to the forest service Standards for Felling and Reforestation. Any mitigation measures such as silt traps and bridging points outlined on the harvest plan can be put in place.
We can cover all aspects of timber harvesting from obtaining felling licenses, to the delivery of timber and everything in between.
Thinning
Thinning is the practice of removing lower-value trees to allow the remaining, more vigorous trees to thrive, grow faster, and yield higher-quality timber. This process provides forest owners with a valuable source of income through timber sales. By eliminating weaker trees, thinning improves the forest’s overall growth and helps maintain a healthy, sustainable ecosystem. It plays a critical role in plantation management and enhances long-term profitability. For example, in a Sitka Spruce plantation, less than 33% of the original trees remain at the final clearfelling stage. The trees that are removed during thinning can be sold for a range of products, including fence posts, pallets, and MDF. Thinning generates intermediate income every 3-5 years and is essential for maintaining a forest’s health, supporting its continued growth and productivity until it reaches the final clearfelling stage.
Clearfell
Clearfelling is a forestry practice where all or most of the trees in a specific area of the forest are cut down at once. After clearfelling, the area may be replanted with new trees or allowed to regenerate naturally. Clearfelling a forest can have several benefits, depending on the specific context and objectives. One benefit is timber production. Some forests are often cultivated for their valuable timber. Clearfelling allows for efficient and concentrated harvesting of the trees, maximizing timber yield for commercial purposes. The harvested timber can be used in various industries, especially construction. There are also economic benefits to forest owners, forest contractors, and local communities. It creates employment opportunities in the forestry and timber sector, stimulates the local economy, and generates revenue through the sale of timber products. Flaherty Timber is committed to ethical and sustainable harvesting and minimises environmental risks.
